Reading 葬送のフリーレン in Japanese

Frieren, an elf mage who helped defeat the Demon King, sets out again after the hero Himmel dies, wanting to understand humans. Every kanji has furigana and the lines are short and quiet, so it suits a first manga once the basics are in place; the harder part is the vocabulary of fantasy and a few literary words.

How hard it is

The Japanese is gentle. Speech bubbles hold a line or two, much of the story is told in pictures, and the furigana means no kanji has to be known in advance. What takes work is the fantasy setting, which runs on words for heroes, demons and magic, and the odd written word that turns up in quiet scenes, such as 些細 or 片時. The characters also speak differently: Heiter is polite, Himmel cheerful, Frieren short and flat. After a beginner textbook, it can be read with a dictionary at hand.

Other readers’ ratings: Natively for the manga and jpdb for the anime.

Names, spells and their readings

The characters’ names are in katakana, so they read as written: フリーレン (Frieren), フェルン (Fern), シュタルク (Stark), ヒンメル (Himmel), ハイター (Heiter) and アイゼン (Eisen). Spells and monsters are different: the kanji give the meaning and the ruby gives a German-sounding name. These readings are as the official anime site gives them.
