Reading 本好きの下剋上 in Japanese

A university student who lives for books dies and wakes up as マイン, the sickly daughter of a soldier, in a town where few people can read and books are out of reach, so she sets out to make one. The early volumes stay inside a poor household and use mostly everyday words; the narration is dense with kanji, and an edition with furigana on every kanji makes a gentler start.

How hard it is

Volume 1 hardly leaves マイン's home: a high fever, cooking, preparing for winter, a hair ornament for her sister. The words for all this are everyday ones, far from the palace and medicine of 薬屋のひとりごと. The weight is in the writing. マイン tells the story herself in long sentences packed with kanji, and ruby is kept for rare readings, so words such as 陶酔 and 眉根 come without help. Her attempts at a first book bring in the history of writing: 粘土板, 木簡, 石板. Later parts move to the temple and the nobility, each with vocabulary of its own.

The TOジュニア文庫 edition opens with the same text and puts furigana on every kanji; its 第一部 runs to four books instead of three. Other readers' ratings: Natively and jpdb.

Reading it with Fusen

Make a collection for the series and save words with + as you read. Writing materials such as 粘土板 and 木簡 return as マイン tries one after another; the second time one comes up, the popup marks the word Saved 1×, and one tap brings back the sentence you saved it with. A series this long is where the immersion reading guide's Keep going pays off: the vocabulary repeats from part to part.
