Reading SPY×FAMILY in Japanese
A spy known as 〈黄昏〉 must start a family to get close to his target, and ends up with a daughter who reads minds and a wife who is secretly an assassin. Every kanji has furigana, but the spy plot brings politics and intelligence words from the first page; Anya’s scenes are much easier.

How hard it is
The story opens in the middle of a spy operation, and the first chapter uses words such as 外交官 and 暗殺 before the family appears. The spy scenes are the wordiest, with briefings and plans in crowded bubbles, while scenes at home use everyday Japanese. Anya’s lines are the easiest in the book: short, mostly in kana, with her own name in place of “I”.
Other readers’ ratings: Natively for the manga and jpdb for the anime.

Names, code names and their readings
The family’s names are in katakana: ロイド (Loid), アーニャ (Anya), ヨル (Yor) and the dog ボンド (Bond), all フォージャー (Forger). Code names, countries and school titles are written in kanji, most with a different word in the ruby that no dictionary gives. The readings are as the official anime site gives them.
| Name | Reading | Who or what |
|---|---|---|
| 黄昏 | たそがれ | ロイド’s code name as a spy |
| いばら姫 | いばらひめ | ヨル’s code name as an assassin |
| 夜帷 | とばり | the code name of フィオナ, ロイド’s colleague |
| 梟 | ストリクス | ロイド’s operation: a fake family and a child at an elite school |
| 西国 | ウェスタリス | the western country ロイド spies for |
| 東国 | オスタニア | the eastern country where the family lives |
| WISE | ワイズ | the section of 西国’s intelligence service that works against the East |
| 皇帝の学徒 | インペリアル・スカラー | the honour for the best students at イーデン校, Anya’s school |
| 星 | ステラ | a mark of merit at イーデン校 |
| 雷 | トニト | a mark against a student at イーデン校 |
| 管理官 | ハンドラー | シルヴィア’s post: ロイド’s superior at WISE |
| 寮長 | ハウスマスター | ヘンダーソン’s post at イーデン校 |
Things that trip readers up
- The ruby is a second word. 西国 is read ウェスタリス and 星 ステラ: the kanji say what something is, the ruby what it is called. Look up the kanji for the meaning and keep the ruby as the name.
- Anya’s speech isn’t textbook Japanese. She calls herself アーニャ, leaves out particles and says almost everything in kana, so a word can be hard to spot until you read the line aloud.

Reading it with Fusen
A word saved from a bubble is kept with its page, in a collection of its own if you make one for the series. Mission words such as 任務 and 標的 return in every arc, and from the second time on the popup marks them Saved 1×. How to read without looking up every word is in the immersion reading guide.
