Reading よつばと! in Japanese

Yotsuba, an unusual five-year-old girl, moves to a new town with her dad and meets the family next door; each chapter covers about one day of her life. Every kanji has furigana and the words are those of daily life, which makes it a common first manga. What slows learners down is the speech: Yotsuba and her dad talk in casual, clipped Japanese that textbooks leave out.

How hard it is

The vocabulary is that of daily life: moving house, summer holidays, milk, keys, the neighbours. The grammar is what takes getting used to. Yotsuba and her dad speak in casual forms such as すげぇ and うめぇ, cut words short and stretch vowels with ー, while 風香, the girl next door, switches to polite Japanese with adults. Many panels carry only a sound effect, drawn into the picture in hiragana or katakana. Readers who know kana and some basic grammar can start here.

Names

Almost every name is written in kana: よつば, her dad, whom she calls とーちゃん, and his friend ジャンボ. The first name in kanji is 風香, read ふうか, one of the girls next door; in chapter 2 she spells it out for Yotsuba.
